Tanim Hussain Shawon is an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, a Barrister and a Partner at Dr. Kamal Hossain and Associates, having joined the Firm in 2007.
Tanim’s main practice areas include commercial and corporate, constitutional and administrative, arbitration, admiralty and shipping, banking and foreign exchange, capital markets, labour and employment, energy and petroleum, telecommunication and public interest law.
Tanim has acted as counsel in international commercial arbitrations under the UNCITRAL Rules, ICC Rules and the Arbitration Act, 2001 of Bangladesh. He has also acted as counsel in large-scale cross-border mergers, acquisition and divestment matters in the telecommunications, pharmaceutical, electronics and general industrial and service sectors. He has assisted in the listing of companies in stock-exchanges in Bangladesh, Singapore and Hong Kong. He has acted as counsel in various reported cases that involved a broad range of issues, from revenue and commercial disputes to constitutional law. He has represented clients pro bono in public interest litigation on workers’ safety and the right to information.
Amongst other publications, Tanim co-authored, with Dr. Kamal Hossain and Dr. Sharif Bhuiyan, “National Report Bangladesh” published in the ICCA International Handbook on Commercial Arbitration (Kluwer Law International, 2022). He also authored the Bangladesh Report (2019) for the International Bar Association Anti Money Laundering Forum and a Guidance Note on Bangladesh (on data protection and privacy laws) for OneTrust (2021 and 2022).
Tanim earlier worked at Eversheds LLP, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, in its Shipping and International Trade Department as a secondee from the Firm (2008 – 2009).
Tanim has an LL.M. degree from the University of Dhaka (2003), and LL.B. (Hons) degrees from the University of Dhaka (2002) and the University of London (2006). He completed a Post-Graduate Diploma (Bar Vocational Course) from the University of Northumbria, UK (2007). He was enrolled as an Advocate by the Bangladesh Bar Council (2003), and permitted to practise before the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh (2008).
Tanim is a member of the Dhaka Bar Association, the Supreme Court Bar Association, and the Hon’ble Society of Inner Temple.
